Episode 039 - How Amberly Grant Rose Stronger Through Building Community
Chris and Deb have a heart-centered conversation with Amberly Grant, founder of Amberly Grant Finance, where she hosts her weekly #fintalks with an ever-growing community of individuals seeking and supporting each other in building financially resilient lives.
They all really dig deep in this episode to uncover:
- the relationship between trauma and money
- where our money stories come from, why we hang on to them, and how to begin letting go
- Amberly’s financial and emotional low at the beginning of the pandemic
- how she overcame these obstacles through creating an online community
- what that community’s grown into in such a short time
- building healthy routines to maintain positive mental/emotional health
- how you can be a part of the same community that is helping so many thrive
We close with:
It’s never just about the money, is it?
Money its self is an inanimate object, a tool. Most of the time we don’t even see it, yet it’s something we tell ourselves we have or don’t have, we’re good with or bad with, we like or we hate.
It’s more about the story we tell ourselves about money, and our stories, most of them anyway, have a long past. They most likely began before we were even physically in the world and were passed on to us, through words and actions, as we grew.
Rebecca Solnit asks, in her book The Faraway Nearby,
“What is your story? It’s all in the telling. Stories are compasses and architecture; we navigate by them, we build our sanctuaries and our prisons out of them…”
We tell ourselves stories all the time.
It’s so easy to get stuck in the stories we’ve heard, been shown, or gathered about ourselves since we were young–to continue the unconscious cycles we’ve been presented with.
Sometimes these stories are about money and finances, “We aren’t good with money.” or “Our family will never be rich.” or “Wealthy people are greedy or selfish.”
Sometimes the stories can be about our health, “Everyone in our family is ____.” or whatever we may have been told about our bodies and our destinies growing up and continuing into adulthood.
Often these stories can be so ingrained in our being that we don’t even realize we’re repeating them to ourselves, that we’re behaving in a way that makes them true.
Amberly shows us an example of what can happen by bringing awareness to those stories. When she realized her stories were taking her to a dark place, she found light by growing a community that she could teach and learn from, a community that supports her in rewriting her story while she inspires them to do the same.
What if you could change the stories you are unhappy with? What if you could begin rewriting your story too?
As Nipsey Hussle says, “If you look at the people in your circle and don’t get inspired, you don’t have a circle, you have a cage.”
Let’s all take Amberly’s story as inspiration to question and rewrite our stories, as affirmation that the community that will support us in doing so is out there waiting for us.
May you begin to step through any bars that are caging you a nd toward the stories, the communities, that are meant for you today, friend. May you break free of old narratives, finding the story your soul is trying to tell. May you put pencil to metaphorical page and begin writing it for yourself this time. And in doing so may you find a growing confidence as you surround yourself with people that elevate and support you and a heart so full of gratitude it shows on your face, as you bask at the wonder of the uplifting circle you’re a part of.
As always, much love to you on your way, today and everyday!
