Why YOU need a bucket list! Episode 006

Episode 006 - Why YOU need a bucket list!

In this episode, Chris and Debbie sit down to talk about bucket lists.

Chris talks about being a natural planner and assuming everyone had a bucket list. A large part of his bucket list began on a trip to Alaska when he saw the mountain, Denali. He bought a couple of used books about it (Mt. McKinley at the time) while he was there, and it was all downhill from there. Some of the items on his bucket list include mountaineering, climbing fourteeners and thirteeners in CO, travel, and through-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

Debbie talks about why she’s resistant to lists in general and why she’s come around to at least making a mental bucket list. Hers includes writing a children’s book, learning to play the guitar, getting her pilot’s license, surfing, and travel.

They also discuss:

  • How to commit to
  • Plan for and check off items on your bucket list through:
    • Prioritizing
    • time blocking
    • breaking goals into actionable steps
    • focusing on just the next step, one step at a time

They also answer questions about:

  • Overcoming fears to accomplish items on your bucket list
  • Writing it down to keep yourself accountable
  • Why they like to encourage each other to accomplish items on their bucket lists
  • Do you need to quit your job to check off items on your bucket list
  • Where the name GoBucketYourself came from

They leave you with this thought:

“Whether you’re a list person or not, chances are you have some desires or dreams within you that aren’t going away. What are those dreams simmering in your soul that aren’t being silenced no matter how hard you try to ignore them? Have you taken the time to put them in a list?

The truth is that most of the things we dream about are possible on the weekends, or on an early morning, or evenings, or even a vacation. We don’t always have to completely disrupt our lives to make our desires a reality. If we break our end goals apart into smaller, doable steps, they move from dreams to actual possibilities. By taking just the next step, we build both confidence and insight about the next step we should take after that. If we continue moving forward just one step at a time, our fears become quieter, taking a backseat to designing a life that allows us to step closer to the life we dream of.

Being confronted with the truth of my own mortality–a truth for all of us, health issues or not–pushed me into making the most of as many of my days as possible. That meant getting clearer about what it was I really wanted. As I continued to take steps toward living a joyful, memorable life as frequently as possible, I realized there was nothing to feel guilty about at all. Reaching for my desires and fulfilling my purpose has continued to mold me into the kind of human I want to show up as in this world, whatever the label maybe–wife, mother, friend, teacher.

At GoBucketYourself what we want for you is exactly what Annette White said, ‘Stop dreaming about your bucket list and start living it.’

What tiny seed is begging to sprout from the depths of your soul, friends? May you find just the next step in moving toward it. In giving yourself permission to take just the next step, may you find that the rest begin to illuminate your path until you begin to live each day fully, knowing you’ve got just this ONE LIFE and you choose to LIVE IT!
